What Is Filler Dissolving?

Filler dissolving involves injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase into tissue containing hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronidase breaks down hyaluronic acid, allowing unwanted filler material to be reduced and cleared over time.

Hyalase is licensed for medical uses including helping injected substances spread through tissues and promoting the absorption of excess fluid. Its use for cosmetic filler correction falls outside its licensed indications and is therefore described as off-label treatment.

The treatment is commonly considered for lip-filler migration, overcorrection, visible ridges, asymmetry or filler that no longer suits the patient’s preferred appearance. It may also form part of a staged plan before more conservative lip enhancement is considered later.

Hyaluronidase principally acts upon hyaluronic acid fillers. It does not reverse calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, silicone or other non-hyaluronic products in the same manner.

Different hyaluronic acid fillers do not dissolve identically. Their formulation, cross-linking, position and quantity can affect their response, and denser products may require a different dose or more than one appointment.

The treatment cannot guarantee a precise return to the appearance that existed before any filler was placed. Natural ageing, repeated injections, tissue stretching and pre-existing asymmetry may still influence the lips after unwanted volume has been reduced.

Concerns That May Be Assessed

Migrated Lip Filler

Migration may appear as fullness or a ridge above the natural upper-lip border. Hyaluronidase may be considered where examination suggests that hyaluronic acid product has extended beyond the intended treatment area.

Overfilled Lips

Repeated treatments or excessive product may create more projection and volume than the patient intended. Dissolving may reduce some or all of this volume, although complete precision cannot be promised.

Uneven or Asymmetrical Results

One side may appear fuller because of product placement, swelling or natural asymmetry. Assessment is important because dissolving filler will not remove anatomical differences that were already present.

Visible Ridges or Poorly Defined Borders

Filler positioned too superficially or outside the intended lip border may create a noticeable line. Selective treatment may be discussed, but hyaluronidase can diffuse beyond one microscopic point.

Lumps and Irregularities

Not every lump is caused by straightforward filler placement. Inflammation, infection, scar tissue and product-related nodules require different management, so examination should precede treatment.

A Change in Personal Preference

A patient does not need to experience a medical complication to consider dissolving. They may simply prefer softer volume, clearer lip borders or a return towards their natural proportions.

Preparing for Filler Dissolving

Try to obtain your previous treatment record. The product name, amount, batch details and injection date can help determine whether hyaluronidase is likely to be effective.

Send clear photographs when requested. Images taken at rest and while smiling may help illustrate migration or asymmetry, but they cannot replace an in-person examination.

Tell the clinic how recently the filler was administered. Early bruising and swelling may temporarily resemble migration, overfilling or uneven placement.

Provide a complete medical history, including allergies, previous anaphylaxis and reactions to filler, local anaesthetic or hyaluronidase. The official medicine information lists hypersensitivity to hyaluronidase as a contraindication and recognises severe allergic reactions as a possible risk.

Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding. The official medicine information states that available pregnancy evidence is insufficient and recommends avoiding use unless no safer alternative is available. Elective aesthetic treatment is normally postponed in these circumstances.

Tell the clinic about active cold sores, infection, unexplained inflammation or broken skin around the lips. The cause should be assessed and treatment may need to be delayed.

Bring a complete list of prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements. Do not stop prescribed medication without advice from the healthcare professional responsible for it.

Avoid excessive alcohol shortly before the appointment because bruising can occur after injections.

Arrange treatment away from an important event. The area may initially look more swollen or uneven before the effect of hyaluronidase can be assessed.

Attend without heavy lipstick or makeup around the mouth where practical. Clinical photographs may be taken to document the starting appearance.

Filler-Dissolving Aftercare

Redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising and local irritation can occur after hyaluronidase injections. The treated area may temporarily appear fuller even though filler is beginning to break down.

Avoid repeatedly pressing, squeezing or trying to reshape the lips. Massage should only be performed when Dr Laura Geige has given a specific instruction.

A clean, wrapped cool compress may be used if recommended. Do not apply ice directly to the skin or place heavy pressure over the treated tissue.

Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, alcohol and unnecessary pressure during the early recovery period according to the individual guidance provided by the clinic.

Makeup and active skincare products should be resumed according to your aftercare instructions rather than applied immediately over fresh injection points.

Do not arrange new lip filler simply because volume appears reduced during the first few days. Swelling must settle before the tissues and remaining product can be assessed properly.

More than one appointment may be necessary where filler is dense, longstanding, widespread or resistant to the initial treatment. Research confirms that filler composition and hyaluronidase concentration affect the response.

Contact the clinic if swelling, heat, redness or pain becomes progressively worse or if an unexpected symptom develops.

Difficulty breathing, widespread hives, faintness or swelling away from the injection area may indicate a serious allergic reaction and requires emergency medical assistance.
