What Is Filler Dissolving?

Filler dissolving involves injecting hyaluronidase into tissue containing hyaluronic acid filler. The enzyme modifies and breaks down hyaluronic acid, allowing unwanted filler gel to be reduced.

Hyalase contains hyaluronidase and is supplied as a powder for injection. Its licensed medical uses include helping injected medicines spread through tissue and promoting the resorption of excess fluids or blood. Cosmetic filler removal is not among its licensed indications, which is why this use is described as off-label.

In aesthetic practice, hyaluronidase may be considered for overcorrection, misplaced product, asymmetry, visible lumps, delayed nodules and other concerns associated with hyaluronic acid fillers.

The treatment can begin acting promptly, although swelling caused by the injections may initially disguise the reduction in filler. A reliable assessment is usually made after the tissues have had time to settle.

Different filler products respond differently. The amount of cross-linking, density, age, position and quantity of filler can influence the amount of hyaluronidase required and whether more than one treatment session is needed.

Filler dissolving cannot guarantee that the lips or face will return precisely to their pre-treatment appearance. Natural ageing, repeated procedures, tissue stretching and pre-existing asymmetry may remain visible once filler volume has been reduced.

Preparing for Filler Correction

Take clear photographs if the appearance varies throughout the day or is more noticeable when smiling. Photographs can provide useful context, although they cannot replace an in-person examination.

Tell the clinic how recently the filler was administered. Early swelling may make the lips or face look larger, firmer or less even than the eventual result.

Provide a complete medical history. Include allergies, previous anaphylaxis and any reaction to filler, local anaesthetic, medicines or hyaluronidase.

Mention bee or wasp-sting allergy if relevant. Specialist aesthetic guidance notes that sensitisation to insect venom can be relevant when evaluating allergy risk with animal-derived hyaluronidase.

Filler-Dissolving Aftercare

Redness, tenderness, swelling, bruising and local irritation may occur following hyaluronidase injections. Local infection, bleeding and severe allergic reactions have also been reported rarely.

The treated area may look temporarily fuller despite the enzyme beginning to act. Allow injection-related swelling to settle before judging the outcome.

Avoid repeatedly pressing, squeezing or attempting to reshape the area. Massage should only be carried out if specifically advised.

A clean, wrapped cool compress may be used where recommended. Avoid placing ice directly against unprotected skin or applying forceful pressure.

Strenuous exercise, excessive heat, alcohol and unnecessary pressure may need to be avoided during the early recovery period. Follow the personalised instructions provided after treatment.

Makeup and active skincare should not be applied directly over fresh injection sites until advised.

Do not arrange immediate replacement filler. The area should first be reviewed once swelling has settled and the degree of dissolving is clearer.

Further sessions may be required where filler is extensive, longstanding or resistant. The clinic’s current price list specifically notes that additional treatment may sometimes be necessary.

Contact the clinic if pain, heat, redness or swelling becomes progressively worse rather than beginning to improve.

Difficulty breathing, widespread hives, faintness or swelling away from the treated area may indicate a serious allergic reaction and requires emergency medical assistance.
